The application process for an American passport varies depending on a number of factors. If you already have a passport, you might be able to renew it, instead of applying for a new one.
To apply for a US passport, you will need to apply in person if one of the below statements is true for you:
- It is your first US passport
- You’re under the age of 16
- Your last passport was issued when you were below the age of 16
- Your last passport was damaged, stolen or lost
- Your last passport was issued over 15 years ago.
Supporting Documents
As part of your application you need to submit proof of your identity. This can take the form of either an original document or a certified photocopy. The following documents are accepted:
- Valid, undamaged American passport (can be expired)
- American birth certificate (that lists your date of birth, place of birth and full name. It needs also list your parents full names and have the date of which it was filed at the registrar’s office. Additionally, it needs to have the seal from the issuing authority)
- Certificate of Citizenship
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad
You will need to submit a photocopy of the original documents front and back. Photocopies need to be:
- Single sided
- Fully legible
- White 8.5 inch x 11 inch paper
- Black and white
Provide a Photo
You need to submit a photo with the application. The photo must be:
- High resolution and clear in focus
- 51 x 51 mm
- Head needs to be between 25 and 35 mm from the base of the chin to the top of the crown
- Digitally unaltered
