What a residence permit really is?
If you want to apply for it, we advise you first to get to know with the document.
A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is an official document that:
- confirms your identity
- allows you to stay in the United Kingdom
- you must have if you plan to stay longer than 6 months in the UK.
When should you apply for a residence permit?
Actually, in most cases, you do not have to apply for a residence permit separately. It is issued together with a document that allows you to enter the country, such as a visa. However, from time to time you will have to apply for a residence permit. These cases are the following:
- if you change your personal data (name, gender, nationality, and so on)
- if your residence permit is lost or stolen.
Be aware that you have only 3 months to report a change in your personal information or that your permit is lost or damaged, because otherwise you may be fined or your stay may be shortened.
If your residence permit is going to expire soon, your visa expires too. So, to extend your BRP, apply to extend your visa.
