Officials in Phuket are in support of a visa scheme for digital nomads who wish to live in Thailand, otherwise known as the land of smiles. Digital nomads can be described as foreigners working remotely for top tier companies in various roles.
While some work on a contract to contract basis, others are employed more permanently, but the one thing all digital nomads have in common is that they like to travel while working. The scheme would help those working remotely who wish to live in the country.
Foreigners with the digital nomad visa will be provided with a work permit and permission to stay on the island for between 6 months and 1 year. The scheme also permits internationals to open a bank account and purchase health insurance. There is a separate 10-year visa that is also in the making, intended to draw wealthy travellers long-term from four different categories:
- Digital Nomads who are currently mostly using tourist visas
- Professionals that are highly skilled who would advance Thailand
- Wealthy internationals who are currently using the Thailand Elite Visa
- Wealthy pensioners flock to Thailand because is a retirement haven
The tourism industry in Thailand took a huge knock during the pandemic and a digital nomad visa could take major strain off the seasonal economy. It is hoped that the scheme will fuel tourism and ultimately boost the economy. More digital nomads could mean job creation in the form of new co-working spaces, restaurants and cafes.
How to Apply?
As the legislation for the new Digital Nomad Visa has only just been passed, digital nomads currently need to apply for the tourist or another type of visa.

What Documents are Needed?
- The Digital Nomad Visa includes a work permit (if for remote work alone).
- As per all government documents, you will need official photographs and a form of identification to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa
How Much Does it Cost?
The document will cost 10 000 baht ($300) per year, offering a significant discount in comparison to the Thailand Elite Visa scheme (excluding VIP airport privileges). It isn’t known what income requirements are needed in order to be eligible for the Digital Nomad Visa.
How Long is the Document Valid For?
The document is valid for 5 years, but this can be extended to a further 5 years.
