What documents do you need to travel with your pet in the EU? EU pet passport

Whether you are coming from a non-EU country or traveling within EU, it is obligatory that your pet is chipped and has an identity documents : a valid European pet passport or an EU animal health certificate (coming from non-EU country).

General requirements for all pets traveling within or into the EU

In order to start the journey with your pet, you will have to fulfil the following standards :

  • Your pet must be micro-chipped or have a clearly readable tattoo.
  • The animal must have received a vaccine shot against the rabies.
  • Has been treated against the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis.
  • Holds a valid EU pet passport or an EU animal health certificate.

Travel documents for your pet dog, cat or ferret

EUROPEAN PET PASSPORT

A European pet passport allows to travel between the EU countries. The standard model of the EU passport includes a description and details of your pet, including its microchip or tattoo code as well as its rabies vaccination record and contact details of the owner and the vet who issued the passport, and your pet’s passport photo. Any authorised vet can issue an EU pet passport and it is valid for life (or until expiration of rabies vaccination).

European pet passport can also issue:

  • Andorra, Switzerland, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar
  • Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco
  • Norway, San Marino, Vatican City State.

EU ANIMAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE

An EU animal health certificate is another type of document. It contains specific information about your pet (identity, health, rabies vaccinations) and is based on an EU standard model.

  • The document must be issued not more than 10 days before your pet arrives in the EU by an official State vet.
  • It is valid for 4 months.
  • Attach a written declaration that its relocation is for non-commercial reasons.
  • From 1 January 2021, EU pet passports issued to a pet owner resident in Great Britain are no longer valid for travel with pets from Great Britain to an EU country or Northern Ireland.

Traveling with other pets in the EU

The rules states before apply only to cats, dogs and ferrets only. If you are traveling with other type of petyou must check the rules of your destination country. Such pets are birds, reptiles or rodents.

If you are not traveling with your pet, you may give a written permission to someone who can bring the pet to you within 5 days.
